Castiglione del Lago
The name Catiglione del Lago comes from the medieval fortress which dominates Lake Trasimeno and is called the "Castello del Leone" (Lion Castle) because of its pentagonal plan, inspired by the constellation of Leon.
Medieval Fortress is by no means the town's only jewel; it is connected by an interesting walkway to the Ducal Palace to form the imposing complex of the Palazzo della Corgna, which contains one of the most important Umbro-Tuscan cycles of paintings in the Late Mannerist style.
Today most of the frescoes, by Niccolò Circignani known as "Il Pomarancio", have been returned to their original splendour, thanks to painstaking restoration work. The paintings representthe deeds of the valiant knight Ascanio della Corgna.
Other buildings of interest in the town are the Church of S. Maria Maddalena, built in 1836 and the Church of S. Domenico in Baroque style.

Parco del Lago Trasimeno
"Parco Regionale del Lago Trasimeno" conserves an area of 13,200 hectares and embraces the communities of Castiglione del Lago, Magione, Panicale, Passignano and Tuoro. Of the three Trasimeno islands included in the park, Isola Polvese is used as a centre for educational and environmental studies and is part of the Comune di Castglione del Lago. Isola Maggiore has a charming 15th century fishing village and Isola Minore is a privately owned island. This area, rich in fauna, is temporary home to a large number of migrating bird populations.
